ElTyna McCree, affectionately known as “queen of the airlines”, because of her iannate ability to walk on water and create some of the most astounding airline testimonials. McCree now celebrating 58 years as a travel icon began her illustrious career with United airlines in Pittsburgh, Penna, in the lates 60″s. There were so few blacks working then, and she continued her career at Allegheny Airlines(now U.S. air). Her position at Allegheny was Director of Convention Services. She was named official travel coordinator of the Church of God in Christ, in 1968. Eastern and Pan Am airlines stated that her worth was 500.00 a day in 1975, because she had given them so many convention opportunities. She started her first travel agency in 1978 in her beloved Oakland, Calif., and quickly became known as the travel agent to the stars. She booked travel for the lates Alex Haley, Earl Fatha Hines, Dr. Benjamin Hooks, and Bishop Walter Hawkins, to name a few. She served as official travel agent for “Black Filmakers Hall of Fame and became personal travel agent for the late Robert Hooks, Vonetta McGee, Whitman Mayo and many other stars. In the late 90’s, McCree had the golden opportunity to book travel for the radiology department of UCSF San Francisco to all of their training conferences in the US and abroad. When the corporate account was removed, Dr. Roy Filly, Drs. Charles & Gretchen Gooding, and numerous other doctors continued to use her services.
Her convention expertise over the years has been enjoyed by the National Dental, Bar, Optometric, Assn of Black School Educators, Natl Assn of Black Police Officers and Firefighters, Nat’l Kappa, Alpha, Knights of Pythias, and many NFL football families. The late Chauncey Bailey wrote an incredible article for the Oakland Post commemorating McCree’s 40th anniversary, as he had hands on experience working with her in his St. Kitts travel packages. Actor Richard Gant has utilized the services for his myriad treks to Africa, and assisted her in her most recent project of bringing the Ghana Trade Mission to Oakland in 2011.
McCree is possibly the oldest African American travel agent in the nation, and was featured in Upscale magazines’ August 2000 issue. She was named a power broker for the new millenium in the field of entreprenaurs. She shared the honor with such luminaries as Earvin ‘Magic’ Johnson, Isiah Thomas, Bernard Bronner, and the late Atty Johnnie Cochran. She was celebrated as a cutting edge entreprenaur with global connections. In an interview featured in editorials back east, McCree stated that she has seen travel take on myraid changes since deregulation with the airlines happened in 1978, and the Civil Aeronautics Board was disbanded. Airline travel has lost much of its lustre . Most full service travel agencies have long closed, since commissions from the airlines is history, and now most travellers are purchasing online.
KPIX channel 5 utilized A Travel Moment in their official presidential inauguration commercial in January, 2009, and McCree is hopeful that she will acquire many Washington bound travellers in January 2013. Recently on the evening news it was stated that many people are returning to old fashion travel services, due to the lack of the internet to respond to challenges after travel is purchased and the inability to get a refund once a purchase is made. McCree is hopeful that this will return many customers back to the few travel agencies still standing. The success of A Travel Moment is that ElTyna McCree has surrounded herself with a quorum of travel icons and professionals ie, concierges, ticket consolidators, tour operators, around the world ticket agents, and cruise specialists. This makes for an incredible, memorable travel experience for all.
